More injuries in Peak District

A 16-year-old student was stretchered from a footpath after breaking his ankle while on a field trip.
The student, from Rotherham, was with a party on an outdoor education trip near Millstone Edge, Hathersage on Friday when he went over on his ankle, causing an open fracture.
Group leaders gave the boy first aid and alerted mountain rescuers. Edale and Buxton Mountain Rescue Teams went to the scene and an Edale team paramedic treated the student at the site, on a rocky footpath.
He was then stretchered to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital.

Edale MRT to the Rescue

A CLIMBER was airlifted to hospital after falling 20ft at Curbar Edge in the Peak District. He was climbing in the Avalanche Wall area when he fell at around 3pm on Saturday. Edale Mountain Rescue Team treated him for lower back pain before carrying him to an air ambulance scrambled to deal with the casualty.
Crew members, joined by members of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team, helped an injured walker in Grindsbrook, above Edale, later in the day. The 24-year-old had slipped while descending into Edale and suffered a dislocated shoulder. Rescuers carried him on a stretcher to an ambulance and he was driven to hospital in Chesterfield for treatment.
As the teams were returning to their vehicles they were informed a 66-year-old walker, from Bournemouth, had collapsed with exhaustion and hypothermia near to Edale Cross.
What would we do without them – all volunteers. Have any of the three rescued made a donation to the MRT coffers? If they haven’t then ought to!

Great Kinder Beer Barrel Challenge

THE tradition of the Great Kinder Beer Barrel Challenge in the Peak District rolls on next weekend.
Eleven teams of eight runners will carry a full beer barrel from the Snake Inn on the A57Sheffield to Manchester road to Edale village on Saturday, September 10.
The challenge, which involves a 900ft climb over three miles of the boggy terrain of high peak moorland followed by a knee-cracking descent into Edale valley, started 13 years ago as the result of a bet between a local shepherd and the landlord of the Nags Head Inn in Edale.
Each team member receives customary liquid reward and the fastest team wins a full barrel of beer. Money is raised for local charities through sponsorship and fundraising. Peak Ales and Bradfield Brewery are offering their ales as prizes.
The race start at the Snake Inn at 12.30pm and teams are expected to finish in Edale village square at around 1.30pm, where there will be a barbecue.
An evening of entertainment in Edale village hall will include Hope Valley College Big Band.

Edale MRT need your help

Edale Mountain Rescue team operates in the Peak District National Park and is one of the busiest mountain rescue teams in the country. On average they deal with 100 incidents a year.

They now face their toughest challenge-to raise £150,000 for their new base. The team needs to raise the money in order to equip their new home at Lafarge Cement Works in the Hope Valley.

John Poulter has been a member of the team for 35 years.
He said: "We are the people you call when you come to grief.

"We help out walkers, riders, lost children, even animals. We had to dig out cows from the snow earlier this month and rescue sheep trapped on ledges."

The team is completely voluntary and has 50 operational members who are on call 365 days a year.

They receive no funding from the Government or councils and are totally reliant on sponsorship and donations.

They have raised £90,000 so far for the new base from a variety of events ranging from climbing challenges to rescuing the Mayor of Sheffield.

The latest fundraising initiative is a Charity Golf Day to be held on April 27 and people are needed to form golf teams and join in the fun. The Charity Golf Day will be held on April 27 at Sicklehome Golf Club in Bamford. Cost for players is £40 per head and teams need four members. The fee covers coffee and snack on arrival, 18 holes of golf, a rolling buffet meal after play and the presentation ceremony.

To sponsor a hole costs £50 except the 1st and 18th holes which are £100.

For more information contact Jean Gledhill on 01629 640395 or email davidlong@madasafish.com.

Supporters can now donate online with 'Just Giving'. Follow the link from the EMR website www.edalemountainrescue.co.uk to make an instant donation.

Street collecting for the event will be taking place throughout the area from March 10 to May 28.

Have they got a mountain to climb? Not with your help they haven't. Just remember one day you might need them and these guys are THE EMERGENCY SERVICE in the wilds of the Peak District.
